Happy Birthday

Today is Zara's 25 month birthday, and she's officially become a "terrible two". We thought it was the dog, but no, we sent him away for a few days, and she's totally hit a developmental milestone -- and driven off the road! Lucky for us, Jo re-skimmed through the very helpful Happiest Toddler on the Block, only to notice that we'd stopped doing all of the clever tricks that had made 1-2 years such a pleasant experience. So, we've started doing them again, and things are much better, even with Coda around. Yay us.

And those clever tricks are...?

Favorite clever tricks: 1) The fast food rule: repeat to her what she's just said. When she's having a fit about something, this lets her know that you've heard. Calms her right down. 2) Bargaining: Zara more or less always wants something. Since we're mostly going to let her have what she wants (unless it's dangerous or whatever), we can agree that she can have what we would have given her anyway if only she will do this one little thing (like put on her shoes) first. 3) Reverse psychology: I bet you can't put your shoes on. You're too little to put that yucky thing in the trash. I think you get the idea.

There are lots of things. If you had any toddlers left, I'd definitely recommend you read the book. Once kids are school aged like yours, I think they are meant to be angels. Until they are teens. And I don't think there's a book (that works) for that.
