Mothman!
I don't think any of us had heard of West Virginia's legendary Mothman before this, but maybe Zara had? (I totally had. -Z) In any case, Wes and Z took a brief detour on their way home from Tim and Paige's wedding, and ended up in the Mothman museum... and the rest is history. And also, this is a great example of the phenomenon where you don't know about something, learn about it and then all of a sudden it just seems to be everywhere and come up in conversation all of the time? Yeah, Mothman's like that now.

Spring Things
Some things we do in the spring, as demonstrated above:
- Eat dinner in a soccer uniform because we play a lot of soccer
- Also just straight up play soccer
- Grow (and harvest, and EAT) strawberries
- Make silly faces

Obieland... and an eclipse!
Those of us who live primarily in C'ville had just about resigned ourselves to the fact that the one family member who spends a bunch of time in Oberlin was going to get a front row seat to a REALLY COOL total eclipse and the rest of us would have a very meh experience, being fairly far from the totality... but then a series of events (both fortunate and misfortunate?) including the slightly ahead of schedule purchasing of the car that would later be named Aggie (i think?) but somehow is still just called Ru, a dance class performance, a former colleague/teacher bestie of mine having a day off AND a place to for me to stay in Cleveland, and some general churn in the universe made it so I got to be in Oberlin with Z for said REALLY COOL eclipse. I'm usually pretty good with the words and the writing (though this particular blog post may not be a shining example), but I am definitely at a loss for how to describe the eclipse. I mean, superficially things got dark in the middle of the day - we were outside in Tappan Square and all of the street lights started to come on - but also things got SUPER quiet. The birds and all of the other nature noises just, like, ceased. And I was just standing there with Z, holding hands, and the incredible awe and amazement at the universe was just entirely overwhleming, like bring tears to your eyes beauty and wonder. I was surprised by how emotional it was, and how connected I felt. And how unbelievably grateful I was to share it with the small human being I helped bring into the world, who is taller than I am now. It was a lot, sandwiched into a few days filled with other "a lots".
So we took it in for however long the totality lasted, which seemed fleeting but also vast, and then the sun started coming back, and the birds started chirping, and the dance picked up again and we were returned into the rest of life.

Side Quest
I was working, so I can neither confirm nor deny this story, but rumor has it Amity and Wes went looking for some bouldering situation in the Ragged Mountain Resevoir vicinity, and while the did not find said boulder this time (after many tries and a very valiant effort) they maybe have a plan for next time. But, in the meantime, the ran across this fine fella and made a new friend.

C'ville 10 Miler
Well, I finally did it. 17 years after moving to town (and 4 years after I stopped coaching Saturday soccer, which had been one of the main things keeping me from this race), I ran the C'ville 10 miler. It's a FANTASTIC race, even if the conditions this year (and apparently last year, too) were sub-optimal. And by sub-optimal I do mean a fair amount of pouring rain. But at least it wasn't freezing or sweltering, and once you get to be a certain amount of soaked I think you just give up caring? I made my goal time (under 100 minutes) and generally had a pretty good race though there were also a million little things that went just a tiny bit wrong that I was mentally cataloging how to fix for future years... wait, does that mean I'm running this race again? Maybe. Also of course 80% of the tweaks were weather related, so different conditions would be a whole different race. But you run the race you're given, I guess. Props to all of the volunteers and spectators, it really gives us runners a lift.
Also, thanks to Wesley for waking up early to give me a ride there, and then meeting me at the finish. Happy Anniversay, my Love!

WISL 2k24
It was my privilege and pleasure to "coach" this literal supergroup of soccer stars. I did almost nothing but figure out sub rotations, lean on people to play in goal (we had no 'natural' goalie) and really just had myself a delightful time watching them play (and very occasionally, suggesting they maybe nedeed to change a strategy or talk to each other more). Such much fun!

Happy 14th Birthday, Amity!
Happy Birthday to the coolest of kiddos! The teen years are for sure a little bumpier, and I know you miss having Zaza at home, but we've had some pretty good times this year. Looking forward to all of the ways you will undoubtedly impress and amaze me in the coming year (and also maybe make me go just a little bit insane). Love you SO SO MUCH!

Look kids, another birthday!
I'm the primary picture taker (and blogger) so I have no one to blame but myself for apparently missing my last 2 birthdays? This year Z was still home, and we all went to a hike at Bearfence Mountain, which is known for having a very fun rock scramble. I went for a run, I got to hike with my faves, we had delicious ice cream at Kline's, and my parents came over for dinner. It was a pretty fine way to celebrate. Sláinte!
