Day 4: Indooroopilly to Byron Bay
The fourth day of our Australian adventure was the first day we all woke up in beds on the Australian continent. I'm not sure exactly when Amity woke up, but it was around 3:30am. Zara didn't sleep too much later, but she's a voracious reader so she managed to occupy herself for quite sometime. The early parts of the morning are hazy, I know at some point I gave in and let Amity play on my phone so I could get just a few more minutes of sleep. Ah, the things we do for sleep.
The main goal for the day was to get the 7 of us (in 2 cars) to the house we'd be staying at in Byron Bay for the next few days. Byron Bay isn't far from my parents' place - maybe 180km, so only a couple of hours of driving. But first there was packing, and getting our house ready because we were participating in a house swap (though Marmee did most of that, just wrangling supremely jet lagged kids can be a bear).
We made a slight detour to Miettes, Marmee's favorite bakery, for provisions for our long journey ahead. Did I say it was only 2 hours? It was, which normally, is not long. But 2 cranky jet lag kids magnifies everything 100x, so Wes and I were preparing for the worst. We drank some rather large lattes and ate some pastries. And then the strangest thing happened! Zara and Amity, who usually play together a good deal of the time with a decent level of success, had been really getting on each other's nerves for the last few days. However, the spontaneously started interacting in a positive manner. It was shocking. We captured it on "film" then ordered another coffee to celebrate.
The trip to the houseswap house was pretty uneventful. Amity napped, Zara read, the grown ups chatted. We got to the house early enough to get settled in and still make a quick trip down to Clark's Beach for some swimming and playing in the sand. The day finished out with spaghetti dinner at "our" house, and bedtime followed soon thereafter for those of us still adjusting from Eastern time.
